Becoming More Assertive At Work
Being assertive in the office lets you express your beliefs, views, needs, wants, and feelings without violating other people's rights. Assertiveness is about listening to and addressing issues with your manager and/or team leaders and your peers, being confident about your skills and capabilities, knowing and standing up for your rights in a sensible and calm fashion, and giving out your very best to get the most out of every situation. So, by showing assertiveness in the office, you can reach your goals and bring success in your career.
But while some are naturally assertive in the workplace, others are having a difficult time conveying their thoughts and feelings, which halts or delays their career's growth. So, how do you become more assertive at work?
BELIEVE
You must completely believe in your worth as an individual and as a part of your company. Recognise the value you add to your company and know that you're as valuable as anyone else at work. Don't let your overbearing supervisors or bossy colleagues take advantage of you. Be confident and do not let your rights be stepped on. Do so in an appropriate way.
TRY
You should know and understand that although you're given the right to communicate your views or make a request, others also are given the right to say no or disagree. When you encounter this situation, you mustn't feel upset or be aggressive just to get what you want. Being assertive includes self-control which allows you work out a great compromise. Bear in mind that although you might not arrive to the results you're expecting, it's always best to try.
SAY NO
Being assertive is having the confidence to say no to certain tasks that you are not responsible for. If it is very hard for you to turn down unnecessary or irrelevant tasks or favours from your colleagues, begin by saying, "No. I am sorry but I was given some things to finish." Don't go around the bush. If necessary, you could provide a brief explanation.
If you have already put much effort to becoming more assertive, and you are still that passive professional who can't say no and who is not able to stand up for his or her own beliefs, opinions, and rights, it is best to consider getting a formal training focused on becoming more assertive for you to see the rewards of your hard work.
