Becoming More Assertive In The Workplace

Becoming more assertive in the office helps you communicate your needs, wants, feelings, beliefs, and opinions without without stepping on others' rights. Assertiveness is about listening to and addressing issues with your managers or supervisors and your colleagues, displaying confidence about your skills, knowing and standing up for your rights in a composed and sensible manner, and giving the best you can to get the most out of any situation. So, by being assertive at work, you can reach your goals and attain success in your career.

But while people are naturally assertive in the workplace, others are having a difficult time communicating their thoughts and feelings, which halts or delays the growth of their career. So, how do you become more assertive at work?

BELIEVE

You must completely believe in your worth as an individual and as a part of your company. Recognise the value you add to your team and know that you're as valuable as anyone else. Don't allow your overbearing managers or bossy peers demean you. Stay confident and do not let your rights be deprived from you. Do so in a calm and professional way.

TRY

You should know and understand that although you're given the right to convey your opinions and views or make a request, others also are given the right to say "No" or not agree. When such situation happens, you mustn't feel upset or display an aggressive behaviour just to get what you want. Being assertive involves self-control which lets you work out a great compromise. Take note that although you might not attain results you are aiming for, it is always best to try.

SAY NO

To be assertive is to have the confidence to say "No" to certain tasks that you aren't responsible for. If it is tough for you to turn down unimportant or irrelevant tasks or favours from colleagues, begin by saying, "No. I am sorry but I was given tasks to accomplish." Don't go around the bush. If necessary, you can add a brief explanation.

If you have already tried your very best to becoming more assertive, and you're still that passive professional who cannot say no and who cannot stand up for his or her own opinions, beliefs, and rights, it's best to consider getting a formal training on being more assertive so you can be rewarded for your hard work.
