Becoming More Assertive At Work

Being assertive at work lets you convey your views, beliefs, wants, needs, and feelings without stepping on other's rights. Assertiveness is about listening to and addressing issues with your team leaders and/or managers and your colleagues, being confident about your skills and capabilities, being aware of and standing up for your rights in a sensible and calm fashion, and giving the best you can to get the most out of every situation. So, by having an assertive behaviour in the workplace, you can reach the goals you've set and bring success in your career.

But while individuals are innately assertive at work, others find it very challenging to convey their thoughts and feelings, which delays or even stops their career's development. So, how do you become more assertive in the office?

BELIEVE

You must completely believe in your worth as an individual and as a part of the team. Know and recognise that you add value to your company and know that you're as valuable as anyone else at work. Do not let your overbearing managers or bossy colleagues take advantage of or demean you. Be confident and never let your rights be stepped on. Do so in an appropriate fashion.

TRY

You must understand that although you're given the right to convey your opinions or make a request, others also are given the right to say "No" or not agree. When such situation happens, you shouldn't feel upset or be aggressive just to get what you want. Assertiveness involves self-control which lets you work out a sound compromise. Bear in mind that although you may not obtain results you're expecting, it's always best to try.

SAY NO

Being assertive is to have the confidence to say "No" to certain things that you aren't responsible for. If it is very hard for you to turn down unnecessary or irrelevant tasks or favours from colleagues, begin by saying, "No. I am sorry but I was given tasks to finish." Do not go around the bush. You can provide a brief explanation.

If you have already put much effort to becoming more assertive, and you are still that passive individual who can't say no and who isn't able to stand up for his or her own beliefs, rights, and opinions, it's best to consider getting a formal training specifically on becoming more assertive to help you see the rewards of your hard work.
