The Essence of Human Resource Development
It can be argued that the human resources are the greatest assets of business enterprises. The human factor will always be important regardless of the level of automation in a company or business organization. Highly automated and technology-intensive business enterprises will always need for machine designers, computer programmers and maintenance crew that will ensure the functions of the machines. It is virtually inconceivable that a company will be able to operate without human resources.
Majority of the existing manual and dangerous jobs may eventually become automated but human supervision will always be needed. It would be in the interest of a company to have a human resource development program. This can be done in two ways, namely, through system of rewards or incentives and through trainings.
Boosting the morale of employees is the main goal of an incentive or reward system. The reward system may either provide monetary or non-monetary reward, which may come in the form of commendations and promotions. People must have the opportunity for growth and mobility in terms of positions in the company. An incentive or reward system, however, may not have sufficient impact in terms of developing human resources. This is especially true for employees who lack self-confidence and skills.
Individual employees have the innate talents and potential that need to be developed through training. The training should be properly tailored. The company needs and individual aptitudes of employees should be the basis for designing training programs. Training programs could either be highly specific to the jobs or it could be part of generic human resource development of a particular department. These programs may include leadership training programs and team-building seminars.
The company and the clientele are the ultimate beneficiaries of human development programs. For example, a training program aimed at improving communication among the rank and file will help in making business operations more efficient. The process of making decisions will be more tenable. Responding to concerns from employees and clients will be faster. Communication and teambuilding trainings can greatly improve the morale and interpersonal relationships among employees.
If the morale and motivation are strong, employees are likely to perform better. They will tend to seek innovative solutions to problems. There will also be lesser need for direct supervision or micro-management. Many company-sponsored human development programs are aimed at establishing autonomy in terms of problem-solving and individual accountability. These programs also improve teamwork and group cohesiveness.
