“100 per cent of us die, and the percentage cannot be increased.” C.S. Lewis
Death is a hard subject to talk about. It is even more difficult to face, particularly if you have no idea what is waiting "on the other side". It is a common belief that good go to heaven, while terrible individuals go to hell. But if there's no certainty, the possibility can be quite terrifying.
As well as not knowing where you are headed when you die, there's plenty of other things that make death hard to handle. Death means separation; separation from loved ones, from those things you loved and well...everything.
It means suffering. Most people leave this life through agony and suffering. It isn't regularly one just closes their eyes, takes their last breath and is gone without experiencing some type of suffering. Regardless of whether one dies quickly in an accident, there may be horrifying moments just prior to that which make their experience anything apart from agreeable.
Several years ago, my first husband was diagnosed with a rapidly metastasizing brain cancer and given only a few months to live. When I asked him if he was afraid to die he said, "No, I am not afraid to die but I am very scared of the process." That seemed sensible to me. He looked forward, with great joy, what awaited him on the opposite side of this world but knew the journey he was taking would be filled with great discomfort and suffering - and it was.
Separation, suffering and the great unknown of dying makes it understandable why people fear it so. Yet, the Bible shows us dying is something we needn't fear, not if we "live" right. The way we live makes all the difference in the way we die.
“If you live wrong, you can’t die right.” Billy Sunday
If anyone selects to live this life, for and by one's self, without God, then by their own decision, when their days are finished, the only source of power and strength they are going to have to draw upon is their own. Unfortunately, they will find out their private reservoir has zilch to offer them and worse, they haven't any capability on their own to arrive in Heaven.
Jesus is the only real way to Heaven.
John 14:6, “I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father (God who is in Heaven) but through Me.”
When we accepted Him and have a connection with God the Father through Him, we needn't worry about dying any longer.
I Corinthians 15:55 “O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?”
To explain, dying no longer has the hold on you. Any believers in Jesus Christ, dying isn't final. It is merely a doorway to Heaven, our ultimate destination, the destination we were created for. In our eternal home, all suffering, unhappiness, discomfort and disease will cease. We shall experience happiness and pleasure beyond anything we could imagine. Death, then, can actually become something we anticipate instead of fear because of where it will take us. Even the process of death loses its terrifying grip when we travel that journey with our Heavenly Father, instead of all alone.
